Did you know that you can plant strawberries starting in late summer? Strawberries, also known as garden strawberries or fragarias, are the fruit of a plant in the Rosaceae family that are very popular due to their simultaneously sweet and tart flavor.
Although we can find them in any market, we can also try planting them either in pots or in a garden with the tips we provide in this Gardenweb article. Keep reading and discover how to plant this fruit.
When should we plant strawberries?
Planting strawberries can be quite a complicated task (especially for inexperienced hands) as it is a plant that can take longer than usual to germinate, and sometimes it doesn't even succeed. For this reason, many growers, when cultivating strawberries, do so either by buying seedlings or by reproducing the plant's runners. Even so, you can try planting strawberries in your own garden, as long as you choose the correct variety of this plant, i.e., non-hybrid seeds (as hybrid seeds do not germinate correctly).
But, "when is the best time to plant this plant?" you might be asking yourself. The best time to plant strawberries or fragarias is between late summer and early autumn.
How to plant strawberries – step by step

As we indicated in the previous section, planting strawberries is not an easy task, so if you don't have much experience in this sector, it is likely that you will not be able to complete this process. However, if you are still willing to try, we recommend that you follow these steps:
-
First, you will need to add a mixture with a proportion of 60% substrate and 40% worm castings into the cells of a seed tray. Although you can make your own seed tray at home, we recommend one from our online store.
-
Now moisten the mixture once it's in the seed tray and then scatter the strawberry seeds on top, being especially careful when dropping them. It is important to plant many seeds as we generally get fewer to germinate than we expect.
-
Add a little more substrate on top of the seeds (approximately one centimeter thick) and water the seed tray approximately every 4 days.
-
For the seeds to germinate correctly, it is advisable to use a greenhouse as they need a humid and relatively warm environment (with a temperature between 18 and 25ºC).
-
When you observe that your seedlings are about 5 cm tall, it will be time to transplant them into a production pot.
