Did you know that septoria can destroy 40% of wheat crops if not treated? Read on to learn more about this disease.
Do you know what septoria is? It's quite likely that the term rings a bell, especially if you have someone in your circle of acquaintances who is involved in agriculture or gardening. Well, broadly speaking, septoria is a disease caused by the appearance of fungi that, if left untreated, can lead to the loss of various crops, especially wheat or other cereals.
If you want to know more about this disease, in the following Gardenweb article we explain what septoria is and how you can combat it.
What is septoria?
As we have mentioned, septoria is a disease caused by the appearance of fungi belonging to the Mycosphaerellaceae family. Although this condition can appear on any plant, it is more common in cereals, especially in wheat varieties.
In fact, septoria is a major concern for farmers who grow wheat, as this condition can damage up to 40% of all their cereal crops. Therefore, it is important to detect this fungal disease and treat it in time.
How to detect septoria
The main symptom of this fungal disease is the appearance of a series of dark green spots on both the leaves and branches of the plant, which change in color (first yellow and finally brown) as the disease progresses.

Finally, when septoria is too advanced, the spots will spread throughout the plant, first causing delayed growth, and then death (in some cases).
Septoria: tips to combat it
Now that we know why it's so important to eliminate this fungal plague from our plants as soon as we detect it, here are some measures to combat it:
Reduce ambient humidity
If we have detected septoria in our crop, the first thing we should do is reduce the ambient humidity to 50%. This is because excess humidity favors the spread of fungal microorganisms, which we want to avoid at all costs.
Control plant watering
For the same reason as in the previous case, we will only need to water our crop as much as strictly necessary. It is also important to avoid watering them within 3 hours before dusk, as doing so would increase the risk of mold appearing on them.
Control the temperature of your plants at night
To prevent the disease from worsening, it is important to ensure that the temperature variation does not exceed 5ºC so that the crop does not have to expend energy dealing with these temperatures.
Keep all your crops healthy by caring for them with the right gardening materials
