Would you like to know what to plant in September? Summer is almost over, so it's the perfect time to plan our crops for the upcoming winter months.

In addition, we will also have to transplant the vegetables we sowed at the beginning of summer and fertilize the soil they occupied since summer crops require a large amount of nutrients and therefore tend to deplete the soil. Keep reading this GardenWeb article where we will explain what crops you can plant in September. We also offer a series of tips to keep your garden plants in better condition.

What can I plant in September? – sowing according to climate

It's time to sow new crops, but when it comes down to it, we may not know exactly which plants will be most suitable for sowing in our garden. Therefore, below, we will explain what you can sow in September according to the climate of your area:

Atlantic climate

We can sow the following crops directly (i.e., in the ground):

  • Swiss chard

  • Parsnips

  • Borage

  • Garlic

  • Artichokes

  • Endives

  • Turnips

  • Radishes

  • Spinach

However, the following crops can also be sown first in seedbeds:

  • Swiss chard

  • Short-day onions

  • Winter lettuce

  • Artichokes

Continental climate:

We can sow the same crops directly as in the case of Atlantic climates, except for endives, which will first require sowing in seedbeds. In addition to this vegetable, we can also sow the same ones in seedbeds as in the previous section (i.e., artichokes, Swiss chard, short-day onions, and winter lettuce).

Mediterranean climate

Zanahoria en tierra plantada

In the case of Mediterranean climates, we can cultivate the same vegetables directly as in the previous cases. We can also sow vegetables such as beans, peas, and carrots.
In the case of sowing in seedbeds, we can plant the same crops in September as in Atlantic and continental climates.

To sow these crops, we recommend some of the forest trays we have available in our online store.

Tips for organizing your garden in September

Now that we know about the different plantings for this month, below we will give you some tips so that the plants you are going to sow, transplant, or harvest stay in good condition:

  1. Plan well what you are going to plant: although it depends on the area you are in, in general you will surely have a lot of free space for your new crops, so it is the ideal time to plan what you are going to plant for the coming autumn-winter months.

  2. Fertilize the soil: summer crops tend to absorb a large amount of nutrients from the soil. Therefore, it is important to fertilize the soil with a quality substrate like the one we offer in our online store. You can also prepare your own substrate by mixing worm humus with coconut fiber as it will help our plants to retain water without losing their aeration.

  3. Collect your own seeds: if we carry out this process we can save a lot of money and also have better quality seeds. To extract them, you have to let the plant mature and then let them dry in the sun. Once this is done, you will have to store them in a dry and cool place.
