The warmer months are arriving, a time when you're sure to get a good harvest from all the crops you've planted in your garden.
However, even though your harvests may extend into autumn, it's important to think about and plan for summer planting so that we can get our next fruits and vegetables in the coming spring months. But, "what can I plant in July?" you might be asking yourself. Keep reading and discover in the following GardenWeb article the crops you can plant in the summer months, as well as other tips for growing your garden.
What to plant in the summer months

As we have indicated, it is important to plan what we are going to plant during the summer months so that we don't run out of harvest next spring. However, we must also know what type of crop is suitable for planting in July. Therefore, below, we will explain which vegetables we can grow in summer according to the type of planting.
Plants to sow directly in the ground
You can sow the following crops directly into your garden soil:
-
Swiss chard: if we grow it in summer, it is advisable to buy an autumn variety. This plant adapts well to all climates, although Mediterranean regions are preferable.
-
Peas: we can start sowing them from August. Avoid waterlogging and sow in rows, leaving approximately 50 centimeters of separation.
-
Beetroot: it is a subspecies of chard that can be sown in July directly in medium soil. Although it is preferable to sow it in temperate and humid climates, beetroot tolerates both heat and cold well.
-
Carrots: it is advisable to sow them in deep soil. This plant is recommended for mild climates, although it can withstand some frosts.
-
Green beans: this is the last month to plant green beans in the garden. In this case, it is preferable to choose varieties such as dwarf beans or bush beans.
Plants to sow in seedbeds
Unlike the previous crops, there are others that are more delicate, so it is advisable to sow these plants in seedbeds in summer for later transplanting. The best option for sowing in seedbeds is plastic trays as it allows you to transplant the crop without having to remove the root ball. This way, we avoid the risk of breaking the plant and therefore, the crop not being damaged.
Below we tell you what to plant in July in seedbeds:
-
Green broccoli: July will be the last month to sow broccoli in seedbeds. This way, we will ensure that it can grow before winter.
-
Cabbage: it is a plant that adapts to any type of climate. In fact, if you live near the sea, you can also sow it as the sea breeze does not harm them.
-
Wild strawberries: it is advisable to sow strawberries from seeds so that they later adapt better to both the soil and the climate.
-
Summer lettuce: it is advisable to sow lettuce in stages so that you can harvest it according to your consumption needs.
-
Romanesco: although sowing in trays can be done in August, it is preferable to plant in July so that it can grow before winter.
What can I transplant in July
If you already sowed in May and June, you can now transplant into the final pot (or into the ground) in the case of crops such as cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, savoy cabbage, and romanesco. Some crops you sowed in seedbeds, like celery, can also be transplanted into some of our production pots.
Once you have the right pot for transplanting in summer, remember to also choose the most suitable soil for your crops, such as universal substrate, which is a rich mixture of different elements like high-quality black and blonde peat that will ensure the growth of plants and vegetables.
