"What can I plant in March?" is a very common question among our blog readers.
The month of March is mainly characterized by the beginning of spring, which means that temperatures rise, days become longer, and therefore, crops can enjoy more hours of sunshine. However, even though winter is coming to an end, you should never be overconfident, as a week of rain and frost could come at any moment and spoil future harvests. In Gardenweb's new post, we tell you what you can plant in March and what tasks you should do in your garden.
What to sow and plant in March
Thanks to the increased daylight hours, a wide variety of crops can be planted in March:
If you want to start sowing at the beginning of the month, the ideal would be to plant seedlings indoors in a greenhouse. Some of the crops you will need to sow this way are eggplants, peppers, cucumbers, zucchini, and tomatoes.
At the end of this month, you can start planting fruit trees such as lemon and orange trees. Additionally, you should also keep in mind that trees like plum, pear, cherry, and loquat will blossom in March.

If you like flowers, in March you can also plant bulbs such as lilies, dahlias, gladioli, and begonias for them to bloom in summer. Furthermore, if you already had aromatic flowers planted, it will also be time to transplant them to their final location.
Other tasks in the garden
In addition to planning what we are going to plant in March, we should also perform the following tasks in the garden:
-
Prune plants that need it at the end of winter: some trees, such as fruit trees, and shrubs, such as rose bushes, require pruning before spring to continue growing correctly.
-
Prevent the first pests: some insects such as mealybugs, aphids, snails, and slugs begin to appear during this time of year. Therefore, it is advisable to take the necessary measures to prevent their proliferation.
-
Fertilize your plants: it is time to analyze the pH of your soil and check what nutrients they need to rejuvenate. You can opt for chemical fertilizers or natural fertilizers like worm castings.
