What bamboo canes and what measurements are most suitable for my crop?
Today, we want to dedicate special attention in this post to one of the most common questions that arise when planting in the garden: What bamboo canes and what measurements are most suitable for my crop? Well, even though there's nothing strict about this, we are going to clarify some points.
4 important factors when choosing a bamboo cane
We always opt for bamboo stakes or canes because they are completely natural, environmentally friendly, and also very resistant and flexible to adverse weather conditions. However, we can find very thin and small stakes, and others that are much thicker and taller, reaching up to 3 meters. Therefore, it is crucial to consider several factors when choosing them:
-
What we are going to plant. Planting a tomato plant is not the same as planting an olive tree or almond trees. Each crop grows at a different rate, supports a certain weight with its fruits, and has a different height and thickness.
-
How we are going to plant it, meaning, we need to consider if we are going to germinate it ourselves or if we are going to work with a sapling or plant of a certain height. This also influences the choice of suitable bamboo stakes.
-
What climate we have in the area where we plant. It is not the same to face adverse weather conditions for a large part of the year (rain, winds, hail...) as it is to live in an extremely cold or warm area or one with temperature contrasts. All of this will also influence and determine the height and thickness we should choose.
-
What type of staking system we are going to use. It is not the same to use vertical staking as it is to use a teepee, cross, etc. Each of them also affects the number of stakes we are going to use, as well as their diameter and height.
Measurement guide: bamboo stakes according to crop
Below, we present the most common measurements of bamboo canes used in medium-height crops, approximately between 1 and 1.20 meters. This information is a guide and will help you get a general idea of what you might need for your garden or allotment.

Bamboo canes for tomato plants. Varies depending on the type of tomato we plant; for example, if it's cherry, it will need smaller stakes. Normally, stakes of 150-180 cm high with thicknesses of 14-16mm, 16-18mm, 18-20mm are used.
-
Bamboo stakes for almond trees. Normally, stakes of 150-180-200 cm high with thicknesses between 12-14 mm, 14-16mm, 16-18mm are used, and if they are very large, 18-20mm, 20-22 mm.
-
Stakes for pistachio trees. Normally, stakes of 180-200-250 cm high and thicknesses ranging between 22-24mm, 24-26mm, and 26-28mm are used.
-
Bamboo canes for olive trees. The most requested measurements for intensive olive groves are those that range from 120-150 cm high and thicknesses between 12-14mm and 14-16mm. For super-intensive olive groves, the measurements change to 180-200-250cm high and thicknesses between 18-20mm, 20-22mm, 22-24mm.
