Today we publish the third (and final) part of our guide to identifying plant diseases, where we explain the symptoms you will find if they are being attacked by a pest.

We conclude the guide that we have been sharing with you during these weeks to find out what is happening to our plants, with this third part dedicated to pests.

Insects will always be present in our garden or orchard, and not all of them are harmful to our crops. However, we must be alert to some of them that can quickly become a pest that will ruin what we have planted in less time than we think if we do not act in time. Keep reading this GARDEN WEB post to discover the most common plant pests.

Aphids, the most common pest among plants

APHIDS are the insects that cause the most pests in many of our crops. This type of insect is usually distinguished by being small and can vary in color between green, white, red or black.

Aphids are insects that feed on plant sap and their favorites are vegetables such as tomatoes, eggplants, cauliflower, spinach, kale... But also on fruit trees such as lemon or orange trees (among others).

Grasshoppers, another danger for crops

GRASSHOPPERS are a very common pest that can cause great damage to our plants as they feed on leaves and stems.

In addition, grasshoppers can measure up to 8 centimeters, so the larger they are, the more they will feed and can even kill our plant if we do not act in time.

Snails, harmful to aromatic plants

SNAILS AND SLUGS feed on leaves and stems and love any humid and shady plant. So we can prevent this pest by avoiding planting in areas with little light and also opting for aromatic plants that act as a natural repellent.

Other common pests among plants

In addition to the above, we will also have to be careful with the following insects:

  • LARVAE AND CATERPILLARS are another of the most common pests we can find. They attack the vast majority of plants and have a great predilection for broccoli, cauliflower and kale.

  • WHITEFLY is an insect that looks like dust due to its tiny size and whitish appearance. It feeds on plant sap and reduces its productivity. We can find it in a multitude of horticultural and ornamental crops.

  • RED SPIDER always attacks in groups, so, despite being extremely small, it is very harmful. They weave a web among themselves to protect themselves from other insects and thus freely attack the plant by feeding on its sap. They prefer strawberries, pumpkins, corn, melon or fruit trees.

  • COCCINIDS commonly known as woodlice feed, like grasshoppers, on stems and leaves. They appear when the soil has excess moisture and lack of nutrients.
