Spring is about to arrive, and that means we need to stake some crops with bamboo stakes. The question is: which plants need bamboo stakes in spring?
During spring, some crops begin to develop more quickly due to rising temperatures. This means that some plants, such as climbing and vining plants, will need a stake to guide them and ensure they continue to grow correctly. Therefore, below, we explain which plants to stake with bamboo canes in spring.
Tasks to perform BEFORE staking in spring
Before you start staking crops, it is recommended that you perform these tasks in the garden:
-
Aerate the garden soil: Although it is not mandatory, many horticulture professionals recommend aerating your garden soil as it will encourage roots to spread better.
-
Apply mulch: This measure will help prevent water evaporation and promote the life of organisms like earthworms, which are very beneficial for the soil.
Staking tomatoes with bamboo canes
Tomatoes are a climbing plant, so in spring they need a support like bamboo canes to guide them and help them continue growing correctly. For this, the most recommended staking system if you want to guide tomatoes with bamboo stakes is the mesh method, which involves placing the stakes vertically with a distance of 1.5 meters between each one and then attaching a plastic mesh along them.
We can also stake tomatoes with the system of two or more stakes (or easel), which is the most common and simplest method.

*In both cases, we recommend choosing bamboo canes with a height of 180 cm and a thickness of 16/18 mm.
How to stake beans in spring
Beans are another crop that will need to be staked in spring to continue developing correctly. For this type of crop, it is preferable to use the trellis system, in which two stakes are placed vertically and crossed with others horizontally at different heights, tied with wire.
Other crops that need staking in spring
In addition to plants like tomatoes and beans, there are also other crops that will need support in spring to prevent their growth from being hindered. Due to the fragility of their stems, cucumbers, peppers, and peas will also need to be staked with bamboo canes. The best time to do this will be when these plants are between 25 and 30 centimeters tall.

In addition to these tips, you also need to be careful when choosing a product to attach the stake to the plant. Since we are talking about plants with fragile stems, we recommend both rubber anchors and green agricultural tubing, two products that stand out for being very resistant and not causing any damage to the plant.
