Currently, there are many types of substrates to provide each crop with what best suits it. Coconut fiber is one of the most recommended substrates for seedbeds, horticultural plantations, and for almost all types of plants except those considered carnivorous. This substrate is lighter than peat and more ecological since a large quantity of fruits can be extracted from a single coconut palm to obtain it.
Do you want to know more about this 100% organic and renewable substrate? Keep reading this GARDEN WEB post and discover what coconut fiber is for.
What are the main characteristics of coconut fiber?

One of the greatest advantages of block coconut fiber is its ability to retain moisture, nutrients, and other properties that crops need and to gradually release them so that the plant absorbs them practically according to its own needs. In addition, the fibers of this substrate act like a sponge, retaining water and keeping the crop perfectly balanced in terms of humidity.
Another characteristic of this 100% organic and renewable substrate is that it improves root development, enhances soil fertility and structure, and increases the photosynthetic capacity of plants. In addition, since it is a spongy material that aerates easily, it mostly prevents the appearance of fungi or pests.
How can I use coconut fiber?
Coconut fiber is ideal for combining with organic fertilizers since the mixture makes it a most complete and nutritious substrate for cultivation. Among the best mixtures we can make with this material is with worm humus, a 100% organic and natural fertilizer that consists of the natural matter left by earthworms after digesting the soil. In fact, the mixture of coconut fiber with humus is considered one of the best universal substrates we can provide to our plants since it is enriched with nutrients such as iron, vitamin A, vitamin C, trace elements (molybdenum and vanadium), silver, sodium, copper, manganese, nickel, and titanium, among others.

How to prepare the mixture of worm humus and coconut fiber
To prepare this excellent universal substrate, we recommend that you follow these steps:
-
Prepare the coconut fiber for the mixture: take the block (or part of it depending on what you are going to use) and put it in a mixing container such as a carrier tray, for example. Then add a little water to the fiber and, with the help of a rake, break it up little by little. Keep in mind that 60% of our mixture will be coconut fiber.
-
Add the worm humus: add the remaining 40% of the worm humus mixture. If you do not want to acquire this natural fertilizer, in this article we show you how to make it at home.
-
Stir everything again: once you have added the vermicompost in the same place as the fiber, you will have to stir everything again until you obtain a homogeneous and uniform mixture.
-
Optional: to give it an extra boost of minerals, we also recommend adding a small amount of vermiculite.
You will then have your 100% organic and ecological universal substrate ready.
