This is one of the big questions, and also, dare we say, a common lack of knowledge that many of us have when buying pots, as we think they are all the same and suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, and for all types of plants.
WRONG. So today we are going to try to clear up the doubts and clarify some basic guidelines to know what type of pot is most suitable for our space and planting.
As a general rule, outdoor pots can often be used indoors, but not vice-versa. That is, those made of materials like plastic, metal, clay, wood, etc., can be used in both places, but there are other materials specifically designed for indoor use as they cannot withstand high or low temperatures or certain weather inclemencies.
Plastic pots: are they suitable for indoor and outdoor use?

Plastic pots are perfectly suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. They are also very resistant, lightweight, and available in various models at very affordable prices. Thanks to plastic, these types of pots are non-porous, retaining moisture levels very well, and therefore, requiring less frequent watering. However, make sure you don't buy a pot without any holes in the base, as this element is essential for water to drain and prevent our plants' roots from rotting.
Clay pots for outdoor areas
On the other hand, we have clay pots, and yes, they tend to be more abundant in gardens and outdoor areas than indoors for several reasons: their weight and dimensions. They are usually designed for large trees or robust plants, and clay is also a very heavy material. To this must be added that it is also extremely fragile and more exposed to knocks indoors, and therefore, it can break more easily. Clay is also a very porous material, and therefore, we must bear in mind that watering frequency needs to be increased to maintain correct humidity inside the pot.
Glass pots for indoor patios
Glass pots are the most suitable for indoor areas or terraces as decorative elements due to their fragility. They would never withstand sudden temperature changes, wind, or hail, nor are they suitable for many plants, as it is a non-porous material. However, it is ideal for orchids, as the glass allows light to penetrate the roots, which is very beneficial and healthy for this type of plant.
Other materials
Other materials we often encounter when looking for planters are wood or metal. Well, let's be clear that they are merely decorative, and inside them, we must place a plastic pot, as both materials do not have the adequate characteristics to create a pleasant environment for a plant.
