Eco-friendly ideas: How to improve both quality of life and the environment with BAMBOO

Bamboo stands out as a fast-growing grass that requires no chemical fertilizers, absorbs large amounts of carbon dioxide, and offers an eco-friendly alternative to polluting materialssuch as plastic and steel.

If there is one product that stands out above the rest in Gardenweb's online store, it's bamboo canes.

However, besides staking many crops, did you know that bamboo is the main element of many ecological initiatives emerging in different parts of the world? In today's article, we don't want to talk about the uses of bamboo canes in cultivation; instead, we'll present some of these wonderful ideas throughout these lines. Today at Gardenweb, we dedicate this space to ecology and sustainability.

Lance Rake is a company that was offered the opportunity to establish an industrial design studio for sustainable products in one of Asia's most polluted cities: Kathmandu. To combat the terrible pollution levels in this city, Lance Rake began working with local designers who specialize in bamboo architecture. They eventually designed the Habre Eco Bike, an electric bicycle made from bamboo. This electric bamboo bicycle avoids car use and, therefore, helps reduce pollution levels in Kathmandu.

Bamboo Lamps

Another sustainable idea made with bamboo has emerged in Catarina (Nicaragua) by Moisés López, a local artisan who has been making lamps with this material for over 10 years. This local artist began his career as an artisan making bamboo hammocks but gradually started creating these beautiful and ecological bamboo lamps.

Water Filter made with Bamboo

Another excellent and very interesting ecological idea is proposed by Andrea S. Vega, a Doctor in Biology and CONICET researcher: water filters made with bamboo canes. According to this researcher, there is a species of bamboo scientifically known as Guadua chacoensis that is used for biocarbon production. This element is capable of purifying water contaminated with arsenic. Therefore, what this researcher proposes is to make a filter with biocarbon made from bamboo, similar to tea bags. That is, you can put this bamboo filter in a water bottle to remove this type of contaminant.

If the idea proposed by Andrea S. Vega gets the green light (as it is currently a project under technical development), by the end of this year, we could have bamboo filters capable of cleaning up to 8 liters of water.

Bamboo Bottles

Plastic is one of the most serious environmental problems we currently suffer from (and cause at the same time). To curb the production of this material so detrimental to nature, Dhritiman Bora has designed a bamboo bottle that is slowly gaining popularity in India, his home country. Although its design is not as attractive as plastic bottles, this idea is a great alternative because, in addition to being biodegradable, they can also be reused for approximately a year and a half. They are currently handmade from a variety of bamboo called bhaluka and cost about 3 euros.

Bamboo Scaffolding, Houses, and Clothing

In addition to the previous ecological ideas with bamboo, we also offer you the following:

Bamboo Housing

In its 2015-2030 strategic plan, the International Bamboo and Rattan Organization (INBAR) has set out to eradicate poverty and provide access to sustainable housing. And how do they intend to carry out their proposal? With bamboo. According to this organization, not only would bamboo build houses very resistant to earthquakes, but it would also promote sustainability and environmentalism in a very economical way. This is because bamboo is not only a grass that does not emit carbon dioxide, but also one hectare can absorb between 200 and 400 tons.

Endless Scaffolding Made of Bamboo

In Asian cities like Hong Kong, we can observe how skyscrapers are built with scaffolding made only of high-quality bamboo canes. This is because, unlike steel, bamboo stakes or canes offer greater resistance to typhoons due to their flexibility.

Sustainable Clothing Made from Bamboo

Zurita's designer, Mónica Muriel, has also chosen this plant to create her brand's garments. In fact, the sustainability of some of her fabrics is rated with an A (i.e., as an ecological garment). But this is not the only ecological benefit that bamboo offers. She also mentions that, as it grows naturally in China, it does not require fertilizers and hardly consumes any water, which significantly reduces the fabric's ecological footprint.

Where can I buy bamboo canes?

Although these ideas we've presented today cannot be made at home, you can help the planet by replacing iron stakes or other materials that require an aggressive process with our bamboo canes. Our Chinese bamboo is 100% natural and ecological as it has not undergone any chemical process.
