Would you like to have your own hanging plant garden on your terrace? Then keep reading this GARDEN WEB post and discover our tips.
More and more people are opting to create a hanging garden both inside their home and in outdoor areas. This is because, in addition to beautifying any part of the home, hanging plants help us to be more in touch with nature, making the most of the limited space we sometimes have at home.
Do you want to know everything you need to create this space on your terrace? Well, in the following GARDEN WEB post, we tell you which hanging pots you should use, how to maintain the plants in this type of garden, and which ones are most suitable.
What plants are suitable for hanging pots?
Each type of pot is more suitable for one type of plant than another. However, despite the conditions of each species, in the case of hanging pots, we have a wide variety of plants that we can plant in this type of container. In this section, we list a few plants suitable for hanging pots:
-
Pothos: This is a fairly common plant in any indoor hanging garden. To keep it in good condition, it will need many hours of indirect sunlight and you should provide it with a support to grow vertically, as it is a climbing species.
-
Ivy: This plant can be grown in both an indoor and outdoor hanging garden, as long as we choose the right variety. For our ivy to grow well in a hanging pot, it will need, on the one hand, a good universal substrate; and, on the other hand, the container must have good drainage.

-
Spider plant: Like pothos, this plant is more suitable if we grow it in a hanging pot indoors. For it to grow healthily, we must avoid direct sunlight and waterlogging, as this is a main cause of its death.
-
Pelargonium: This plant belongs to the geranium family. Unlike the previous one, pelargonium is an ideal species for outdoor hanging gardens as it requires full sunlight (avoiding the central hours of the day). When watering, you should avoid wetting its leaves and flowers.

-
Surfinia: This is a hybrid species of petunia, and like pelargonium, it is ideal for hanging gardens in outdoor areas as it requires full sun. For it to grow well, we must apply a fertilizer rich in phosphorus and potassium every 10 days.

As we have indicated, there is a wide variety of plants that we can grow in hanging containers.
What pots should I use for my hanging plants?
If you already know which plants you want for this type of garden, the next step will be to choose the hanging pots for each of them. Although each species is unique and will require more specific characteristics, there are a series of common guidelines for choosing a good hanging planter.
The first thing we need to be clear about when choosing a pot is its size, as hanging plants are usually species with large leaves and flowers. In addition, we can guide their growth downwards to create a kind of trellis, so we will need a container large enough to support the weight your plant will gain, and by the way, you will avoid a future transplant.

Another aspect we should consider are the ropes or support from which the pots will hang. These must be resistant enough to bear the weight of the containers and plants. We must also pay attention to their length before buying them, because if they are too short, the pots will be too high, and if they are long, we could trip over the pot.
