Do you know the advantages and disadvantages of seedbeds? Take note and succeed with your crops

Seedbeds are a fundamental tool for any gardener who wishes to germinate their own seeds. They offer superior humidity and temperature control, allowing plants to grow strong and weed-free in a protected space. However, they require knowledge of transplanting techniques to avoid damaging the tender roots of sensitive crops.

Learn about the great benefits and minor drawbacks of growing plants in seedbeds.

If we have already created our urban garden, ideally we should germinate the seeds ourselves. Therefore, we must consider the options we have: sowing in a seedbed or direct sowing in a pot or on the ground.

Generally, we will hear that it is ideal to plant in a seedbed first, but this is not always the case. It all depends on the vegetable or fruit we are planting. Below, we explain the benefits and disadvantages of growing plants in plastic seedbeds.

What advantages does growing with seedbeds offer?

As they are small cubicles, it is much easier to control humidity and temperature, so germination will have a much higher chance of occurring. In addition, seedbeds regulate temperature better, so they are less affected by temperature changes.

Furthermore, being such a small space, the plant grows strong, absorbing all the nutrients from the substrate and in a weed-free environment.

Disadvantages of sowing in seedbeds

The main disadvantage is the lack of knowledge when transplanting. This is because the roots are very tender, and we can damage those of more vulnerable crops such as cucumber, watermelon, zucchini... or legumes (the latter should be transplanted with the root ball intact, without it crumbling).

Therefore, if we do not master the transplanting technique, we may have to opt for direct planting in a pot or on the ground.
