Need coco coir for your own potting mixes? We now have cheaper blocks in our online store.
Coco coir is a fibrous material used as a substrate for many plants and is becoming increasingly popular among both professionals and hobbyists in horticulture. As its name indicates, it is the fiber (or hairs) found on the outside of the coconut, meaning it can be considered a 100% natural and organic product as it has not undergone any chemical process.

Why buy dehydrated coco coir in blocks?
We can give you many reasons why it's better to buy dehydrated coco coir in blocks.
The first of many arguments is that dehydrated coco coir is much cheaper than buying it already prepared in bags. In fact, you can see for yourself that a bag of 5-10 liters of already prepared coir (which is less than 1 kg) costs around 6-7 euros, whereas the dehydrated coco coir blocks we have for sale on our website are priced around 9 euros, weigh about 4-5 kg, and once hydrated with approximately 25 liters of water, can expand up to 70-80 liters.

The second reason we recommend choosing dehydrated coco coir is its ease of handling and transport. Consider that a 4-kilo dehydrated coco block takes up much less space than a 10-liter bag. This is because the former comes pressed and therefore compacted, while the bag will weigh more and take up more volume because the fiber, being hydrated, is already expanded.
Finally, dehydrated coco coir is easier to store than that which comes in bags. This is more due to the human factor, as it can be perfectly preserved in bags, but if we are careless and leave the bag in poor condition, the coir will surely lose all its properties. On the other hand, if it is dehydrated, it will be easier as you can take what you need from the block and store the rest for when you need to use it again.
What are the characteristics of the coco coir blocks for sale at GARDEN WEB?
As indicated, our coco coir is 100% organic from India and comes pressed and dehydrated in blocks of approximately 4-5 kilos. Below are its characteristics:
-
It is very easy to handle, can be reused for up to 4 years, and can take up to 10 more years to decompose.
-
It has a pH of 5.2 to 6.2, making it a neutral, slightly acidic material, ideal for mixing with alkaline soil.
-
It has oxygenation properties, which makes coco coir very resistant to the growth of fungi and bacteria that harm plants.
-
In turn, it is capable of retaining moisture very well (up to 8 times its volume), making it a perfect soil conditioner.
-
Finally, as we have already indicated, it is an economical and good quality product, being environmentally sustainable.
These characteristics make coco coir a fantastic ingredient for any type of substrate. Depending on what you mix the coco coir with, you can use it for seed sowing, as a rooting medium, for cutting propagation, hydroponic farming, etc.
