Want to make your own compost bin with recycled materials?
As we saw in the bokashi home composting article, composts are an excellent organic and ecological fertilizer that we can prepare at home and then use on our plants to avoid the use of other chemical agents that generally contain toxic substances for some crops. However, to make compost at home, we need a compost bin, which is a special container for making this type of fertilizer.
Since we know that these containers can be expensive, in the following GARDEN WEB article, we give you ideas on how to make a homemade compost bin with different recycled materials.
How to make a homemade compost bin with wire mesh

A compost bin is a tool that, although it may seem expensive at first, will pay for itself in the long run if we frequently make homemade compost. However, if you cannot afford that initial cost, in this section, we will teach you how to make your own compost bin with wire mesh, a very cheap and accessible material for everyone. You can also use our triple twist netting to make this tool at home.
Materials:
-
Wire mesh or triple twist netting
-
1 roll of wire
-
Wire cutters
-
Wooden slats
Step by step:
-
Cut a cylinder shape from the wire mesh and then join or baste the sides with wire. Then, stake the cylinder in the place in your garden where you plan to make compost.
-
Cut a circle the size of your cylinder (to make a lid) and then make a square-shaped hole in it.
-
Now cut another piece the same size as this hole and attach it to the wooden slat with more wire to one of the edges of the square. This will create a kind of lid for your compost bin.
-
Your own homemade compost bin will be ready. All you have to do is start making your own natural compost.
Homemade vermicomposter: how to make it

A vermicomposter is a very useful product for those interested in making organic fertilizers such as worm castings. Therefore, below, we will explain how to make one with recycled materials:
-
2 fish boxes or plant carrier trays
-
Wooden slats
-
1 plastic bottle
-
Silicone gun
Step by step to make a homemade compost bin for vermicomposting:
-
First, you will have to drill holes in the lid and bottom of the top tray so that the hole is slightly larger than the diameter of a worm.
-
Next, you will have to prepare a kind of drain in the bottom tray: to do this, make a hole the size of the neck of a bottle in one of the ends of the bottom and then insert the neck of a plastic bottle through it.
-
Now take the bottom of the plastic bottle and stick it in the center of the bottom box. In this way, any worms that may fall to the bottom will be in this place, and thus we will prevent them from being harmed.
-
Once we have the vermicomposter, we will have to place it in a well-ventilated place.
-
Your vermicomposter will now be ready to make your ecological fertilizers. In this article, we show you how to prepare worm castings at home.
