Would you like to know how to grow your own pistachios? Here is a complete guide on how to do it.

Pistachios have become increasingly popular in recent years, with more and more farmers choosing to cultivate them on their land. This is because, although it can take a few years to become a beneficial crop, pistachios are a very profitable crop.

So, do you dare to grow your own pistachios? If so, keep reading this GARDEN WEB post, where we'll give you the keys to success in this venture.

When and where can we grow pistachios?

Pistachio is a unique crop because, on the one hand, it needs a lot of heat and dryness during the warm months, and on the other hand, it requires a lot of cold in winter to sprout vigorously in the spring months. For this reason, we can say that the pistachio tree stands out for its great resistance, as it is capable of withstanding extreme temperatures.

Another aspect we should consider is the area where it is cultivated. For the fruits of this tree to grow properly, we must cultivate it in areas such as the Mediterranean, China, and the southern United States.

When to sow, transplant, and harvest?

If you use cuttings, you will need to plant them in the ground during winter, making mounds about 5 centimeters high to prevent waterlogging when watering.

As for harvesting, it usually takes place in early September, and pistachio trees will take between 3 and 7 years to produce their first fruits.

How to water a pistachio tree – Tips and advice

For our pistachio trees to grow healthily, we will need an annual rainfall level of between 500 and 600mm in our area. If not, the tree can survive perfectly (in fact, it can withstand droughts for several years), but its production will be considerably reduced.

If our area is not particularly rainy and we want our pistachio production not to be affected, we will have to water them ourselves. When this plant is young, it will need frequent but small waterings, avoiding waterlogging at all costs.

Once our tree has reached a more mature age (between 9 and 10 years), we will have to water in the opposite way: we will have to water sparsely (every 7-10 days) but abundantly.

As for the best irrigation system for the pistachio tree, it is drip irrigation. It will be advisable to choose a pipe with integrated, self-compensating drippers. The drippers should be 2-3 liters and spaced 0.50 to 0.75 meters apart.

What type of soil do pistachios need?

Another aspect you'll need to know before planting your own pistachios is the type of soil they require. Although the pistachio tree usually adapts to all types of soil or substrate, the ideal soil pH for this crop is between 6.0 and 8.0. Furthermore, the best results are usually achieved in soils that are well-drained, sandy, and deep.

Is it necessary to stake pistachios with supports?

Once the pistachio trees are larger, they will need a stake to continue growing correctly. This is because the tree's branches can break due to their own weight.

Although there are different stakes on the market, we recommend using bamboo canes as they are highly resistant, flexible, and durable. In addition, bamboo stakes are usually one of the most economical options for guiding your plants.

If you finally decide to buy bamboo stakes from our online store, we recommend that for staking pistachios, you choose a height between 2.40 and 3 meters and a thickness of between 18 and 26mm.
