While very windy days are not common, when they do occur, they can cause serious damage to our plants if they are not properly protected.

We usually worry more about protecting our plants from rain, frost, and excessively hot days. But what about windstorms? While very windy days are not common, when they do occur,  they can cause serious damage to our plants if they are not properly protected.

Therefore, before you star in  "Gone with the Wind"  but with your crops, we recommend you keep reading this GARDEN WEB post where we give you a series of tips to protect plants from strong winds.

Shelter your plants indoors

Indoors, our plants will find the greatest security against windstorms. If our garden is in a plot of land or in very large pots, it is impossible for us to move them inside the house.

However, if we have a small potted garden on our balcony or terrace,  moving them indoors would be the most advisable option to keep them safe from windstorms.

Install windbreaks to better shelter your plants

Another option to protect our plants from windstorms is to install a windbreak, either made of stone or wood.

Another possibility is to use certain  plant species as a natural windbreak. That is, placing the most fragile crops near trees or shrubs such as poplars, willows, cypresses, hollies, or beeches, among others. Using several palm trees as a natural windbreak to protect the rest of our plants can also be a great option.

Reinforce bamboo stakes or stake your plants with more wind-resistant products

Bamboo stakes are an  excellent option for guiding species such as climbers and vines. However, if the wind is too strong, there is a risk that the branches of these plants may break. To prevent the stakes from damaging the trunk or branches, we recommend that, instead of using wire or ties,  you tie the stake with green agricultural tubing or rubber anchors.

It is also important that, if you notice that the windstorm could overcome the bamboo stake, you replace it during those days with a more resistant one such as  wooden slats or  welded mesh.
