It's not spring yet, but... take note if you live in the Mediterranean area to get your crops ready.
We know, it's still winter and it's still a little while until spring officially arrives. However, in the Mediterranean area, some signs of this very special climate that we enjoy can already be seen. The landscape is flooded with almond trees in bloom, flowering heather, lavender in all its splendor... And even in some areas, you can already smell the characteristic orange blossom.
That's why it's important to carry out some tasks to prevent our crops from failing and to encourage them to grow healthy and strong. Keep reading this GARDEN WEB post and discover some tips to prepare your garden for spring.
Finish winter pruning on some plants
Pruning at the end of winter is of vital importance as we will have to remove dead stems and leaves to stimulate the flowering and growth of some of our crops. Among the crops that you will have to prune at the end of winter are deciduous plants and shrubs, plants with a stable shape, and hardy climbing plants.

Remember, before pruning, that your shears are clean and disinfected so as not to damage your plants, and after cutting them, it will always be advisable to use a healing balm to properly close the wounds.
Fertilize your plants at the end of winter

Before spring arrives, another task we should carry out is to check the pH of our garden's soil and then fertilize it according to the needs we find. In this case, you can opt for slow-release chemical fertilizers ideal for this time of year, such as Osmocote Bloom 2/3 months, Osmocote Exact Standard, and Universol Orange from the AICL brand. Or you can also use natural fertilizers such as worm castings.
If you have a drip irrigation system installed, now is the time to check it.
It's normal to neglect our irrigation systems a bit in winter since our plants don't require as much water at this time of year. However, in spring, temperatures rise and we will have to water more, so we must check that everything is in order with our irrigation system.
Some of the checks we will have to carry out are, for example, looking for water leaks in the pipes, changing broken or very worn parts, and cleaning some parts of the drip system, such as the solenoid valves.
