Do you want to know how to prune an orchid without failing in the attempt?
If a few days ago we explained how to water these types of plants, in this new Gardenweb post we will tell you about another aspect to consider when caring for an orchid: pruning. Keep reading the following lines and discover a few tips that will be very useful if you are thinking of pruning these types of flowers.
When to prune an orchid
Orchids are plants with very specific needs. However, once we know them, they are not an especially difficult species to care for. One of the aspects that we must be clear about when caring for an orchid is its pruning, which should always be done at the end of its flowering, regardless of the time of year. That is, when you notice that the orchid's flowers are starting to wilt, it will be time to prune. In this way, we will remove the leaves and flowers that were in poor condition.
Aspects to consider before pruning an orchid

As we have indicated, orchids usually need pruning at the end of their flowering to remove all dead leaves and flowers. However, before getting started, it is important to:
-
Sterilize all your tools: dirty scissors can cause the appearance of fungi and other problems in our orchids. If so, it will be essential to apply a fungicide to it.
-
Sharpen the pruning shears: this way we can make a clean cut and prevent serious injuries to this plant.
-
Confirm that the flowers are very deteriorated: before pruning, make sure they are dead or that the upper part of the spike has a yellowish tone.
-
Know if your orchid is adult: if the orchid does not have the minimum height to be considered an adult, you will not be able to prune it.
How to prune an orchid – step by step
Follow these simple steps to prune an orchid correctly:
-
First, you will have to remove all yellowed leaves from the plant.
-
Then, with sharp pruning shears, prune all dry stems starting from the third node counting from the base of the plant.
-
Now cut all wilted flowers from this same node and then prune the orchid roots, removing any parts that look dry or darkened.
-
Finally, put the plant back in its pot and add the appropriate substrate. Spray both its leaves and base with a little water.
