In addition to being a fun task, introducing the little ones to gardening can help them appreciate the effort it takes for our farmers and gardeners to plant and cultivate new plants.

Would you like to introduce children to gardening? You probably have a memory of trying to germinate a lentil in yogurt with cotton, or drying flowers between the pages of a book. These small gestures are different ways to introduce a child to gardening.

Besides teaching them new knowledge, getting the little ones interested in these tasks will also help them learn to appreciate food and the work involved in growing it. Therefore, in Gardenweb's new post, we will give you some tips to introduce children to gardening.

Easy-to-grow plants for novice children

If we want a child to find gardening fun, we should try to increase the chances of them succeeding in their first plantings. And how can we achieve this? By first teaching them to grow easy plants like the following:

  • Poppies
  • Sunflowers
  • Corn
  • Radishes
  • Lettuce
  • Zucchini
  • Green beans

In addition to easy plants, another great idea to introduce the little ones to these tasks is by growing sensory plants such as chamomile, lemon balm, or cilantro.

How to teach children gardening – STEP by STEP

Besides knowing which plants to grow, it's also important to teach them the correct steps so that gardening is both fun and instructive. However, before you get started, it's important to have the following materials:

  • Seed tray
  • A small pot like the Pegaso bell or production containers.
  • Pot saucer
  • Universal substrate
  • Gloves
  • Watering can
  • Patience... lots of patience with the little one

Step-by-step for growing with children:

  1. GERMINATION: This is the most basic step for them to understand what happens with seeds. We can use the typical lentil or chickpea, place it on a damp cotton ball, and watch how the roots appear, then the stems and some leaves.

  2. FROM COTTON TO SEED TRAY: Once our seed has germinated, we can plant it in seed trays so that the roots can take hold in the substrate. For this, we will need some cell trays, good substrate, and a watering can.

  3. TRANSPLANTING: Once the roots have "taken hold" in the substrate, we can transplant them into a pot and explain why it requires a change, the use of an appropriate substrate, and a fertilizer that will provide the necessary nutrients.

  4. ARRANGING AND PRUNING THE PLANT: Once the plant is growing, we will remove dead, dry leaves, stems without flowers... and teach the importance of pruning. For this, we will need gloves and appropriate scissors.

With these small and simple steps, we will ensure that our plant grows healthily and robustly. We will teach the little ones that with care, dedication, and perseverance, we can achieve a garden full of life and instill in them a love for nature.
