How to choose the perfect pot for my plants

info@gardenweb.es User

Although it may seem like a trivial aspect, pots are a fundamental element for keeping our plants in good condition. Therefore, before jumping in and buying the first one you see in our online store, we recommend that you read this post where we will explain the aspects you will need to consider when choosing a plant pot.

What material should I choose for my pot?

One of the aspects we should pay attention to when choosing a pot or planter is its material, as we will have to opt for one or another depending on where you are going to place it, the needs of the plant, or the type of climate. Below, we list the different materials a container can be made of:

Plastic: This is the most common material of all. These planters stand out for their lightness (which speeds up transport) and their high water retention capacity.

Wood: They are usually quite durable and very decorative. However, if you are going to use it outdoors, it is advisable that they have a treatment to prevent fungi in the wood.

Terracotta: This is a traditional material characterized by being porous, which increases water drainage.

Fiberglass: This is a light, durable, and very resistant material, making it a good option for outdoor use.

Outdoor or indoor: what type of pot should I choose?

As we have said, at first glance it may seem that any pot can be suitable for any space. However, pots must meet certain characteristics if you want them to be outdoors or indoors:

Characteristics of an outdoor pot

  • Good drainage: This aspect is especially important if we live in an area where it rains quite frequently. An outdoor pot must be able to drain water well, otherwise, the plant's roots can rot.
  • Good resistance to frost and UV rays: An outdoor pot must withstand extreme temperatures. The ideal is to choose materials such as plastic and resin.
  • Easy to transport: If they are small plants, this aspect may not be a problem if we choose a terracotta pot. However, if we plan to plant fruit trees or other large plants, the ideal would be to choose a light material such as plastic.

So... what pots are suitable for outdoor use?

Both plastic pots and resin pots are two highly recommended options for outdoors as they are light, weather-resistant, and easy to drain.

Characteristics of an indoor pot

Unlike the other case, any material is suitable for an indoor pot since the temperature is generally more stable and there is no risk of waterlogging due to rain. The only variable is the lightness of the planter, which will depend on whether you plan to move it later or not.

So... what pots are suitable for indoor use?

If you want an indoor pot, we recommend our ceramic planters, some of our decorative plastic and resin pots, or self-watering planters, which will facilitate these tasks, especially in dry environments.
