Do you want to know how to stake a plant with bamboo canes? Bamboo stakes are one of the most widely used products for staking crops because they are made of a material that is resistant yet very flexible. This is very important, as crops that need staking must have a support that will not bend or break due to the weight of the future harvest. Therefore, if you are thinking of staking climbing plants like tomatoes, in the following Gardenweb article we show you how to do it. Keep reading and take note of our tips for staking with bamboo canes.
What materials do I need for staking?
Before you start working, it is important that you have the following materials at home:
- Stakes or bamboo canes: in our online store you can find all the sizes you need to stake your crop. If you have doubts about which size to choose, we recommend that you read our article where we answer the most frequent questions regarding bamboo stakes.
- Agricultural tube: this product can be used to tie any type of plant to bamboo stakes. You can also use other products from our online store such as tying wire, tying tape, rubber anchors and clamps, among others.
- Hammer and rebar: you will need these two materials to make the hole where you will insert the bamboo cane.
- Other gardening tools: it is advisable to have products like a hoe and a planter at home.
Stake with bamboo canes easily with these steps
Once you have all the materials and tools we have indicated, follow these simple step-by-step instructions to stake with bamboo canes:
- Make a hole near the edge of the ridge: you can use a hammer and an iron rod if you find the soil a bit dry. It is best to make the hole a few days after watering so that it will be easier to drive it in better.
- Insert the stake into the hole: it is important to push it in as deep as possible. If after placing it you see that it has remained too far out, we recommend wetting the soil and trying to push it in again.
- Cover the hole well: do not let air enter through the hole. To do this, you can mound up the soil so that the bamboo cane will be more stable.
- (Optional) Reinforce the bamboo stake: if strong winds usually occur in the region where you live (or where you have your garden), it is advisable to place a rebar next to the cane.
- Place the stakes at the top: join two canes and then connect them with a crossbar. Now tie it with the agricultural tube or the product you have chosen for tying. Do this step with all the bamboo canes you want to place.
- Place the stakes at the bottom: you will have to tie the plants that are going to grow to these canes. Place these stakes about 20 centimeters from the ground. After the first month you will have to place a second level of stakes.
Have you followed all these steps? Congratulations, your crop is now well staked and will surely grow healthily.
