Would you like to have an olive tree planted in a pot? Then keep reading this GARDEN WEB post.
The olive tree, also known scientifically as Olea europaea, is a species of tree that is mainly cultivated in the Mediterranean regions. Likewise, this plant is a versatile species, so it is also common to find it in inland areas of the peninsula. However, did you know that we can have an olive tree planted in a pot?
In this GARDEN WEB post, we tell you everything you need to know to plant an olive tree in a container: climate, location, watering, substrate, fertilizer, and the type of pot for this crop.
What type of pot is recommended for olive trees?
The ideal for an olive tree that will be permanently planted in a container is to choose a clay pot (if possible, with wheels) as it prevents excess moisture in the substrate.
However, plastic pots are also a good option for this type of species. In fact, all wholesalers in our area choose our plastic production pots due to their price and versatility in sizes.

Location and climate for olive trees in pots
Whether in a pot or in a plot of land, olive trees are a species that need a warm climate and a location with many hours of sun. Therefore, if you have a garden or a terrace, try to leave the plant in the sunniest area of this part of the house.
However, we must warn you that olive trees are a species that do not tolerate frost well, so if you live in an area with a cold climate, it will be necessary to store the plant indoors when temperatures drop significantly.
When should we water an olive tree?
Depending on the stage of its growth, we will water an olive tree more or less frequently:
-
If it is an adult olive tree, it will hardly need to be watered. If it rains occasionally in your area, that water will be enough.
-
If it is a young olive tree, you will have to provide frequent but moderate watering in those first years. In fact, we recommend that you use a drip irrigation system as waterlogging can rot the roots of the tree.
Still have doubts about watering? A very simple trick to know if it needs water is to stick your finger into the substrate. If you notice that the first 3 centimeters are dry, it will be time to water the potted olive tree.
What substrate and fertilizer do I need for my potted olive tree?
As with watering, olive trees are not a demanding species in terms of substrate as they are accustomed to living in somewhat arid areas. Therefore, we will only need a little peat with gravel or sand for the olive tree to live healthily.

Another option for our olive trees is to mix the substrate with coconut fiber to give it a lighter texture and a little worm humus to give it an extra boost of nutrients as we will be creating one of the best universal substrates.
