In this GARDEN WEB post, we show you how to have your own small garden at home with a very simple step-by-step guide.

The passion for agriculture and self-cultivation is growing. Consuming what one has harvested oneself is a pleasure and a privilege; that is why today we want to help you create your own home garden in just 6 steps. You don't need to be an expert in the field, but you do need to be consistent and monitor your crops to ensure everything is going smoothly or to detect any setbacks in time. Ready?

Step 1: Find a spot with direct sunlight

First, we need a place with direct light. It doesn't have to be a huge plot of land; a balcony or terrace, a small garden, or a patio will suffice, but it must have good sunlight. This is essential since crops need to perform photosynthesis to develop correctly.

Step 2: Make a list of all the gardening materials you need to buy for your garden

Next, we will have to gather material for planting our crops. To start, we need some large planters (or, in other words, production pots) that provide enough space for planting. On our website, you can find a multitude of pots of different diameters and heights to choose the one that best suits your needs.

Step 3: The importance of food for your plants

Once the pots have been chosen, we will opt for soil suitable for what we are going to grow. Universal substrate is the most suitable for vegetables and certain types of plants.

For example, the universal substrate you can find in the online store is composed of black peat, blond peat, and some fertilizer with an organic matter content of around 92-96%.

Step 4: Sow the seeds in your garden

Once we have the soil and the pot, we proceed to sow the seeds or opt for seedbeds. The latter can be found in plastic trays where, when transplanting, it is not necessary to remove the root ball as the entire cell can be planted (this way we do not run the risk of breaking the plant, and the crop suffers less).

Step 5: Plan what irrigation systems you will use for your garden

The ideal for these types of crops is to maintain constant and adequate humidity for the time of year and the vegetables or greens we are planting. We can water manually with a watering can, but we can also opt for more sophisticated methods like drip irrigation. Everything will depend on the space we have and what we have cultivated.

Step 6: Wait for the harvest and enjoy the fruits you have obtained

However, although this is the most rewarding part of the entire process, it may be the most difficult to achieve. You have to be very careful with your garden at all times and learn to detect the best time to harvest. Practice makes perfect.

*Practical tips: For crops similar to tomatoes or those that produce fruits, the ideal time for harvesting is when the color indicates that it is ripe. In the case of tomatoes, it would be the reddish tone. For some vegetables, we have the advantage of being able to harvest leaves without having to pull up the entire plant, as is the case with lettuce, chard, or spinach).

Remember: buy all gardening materials before you start planting in your urban garden

As we indicated in the second step of this post, it is vitally important that you have all the gardening materials and tools at hand to start your urban garden on the right foot.
